Good news! We now have a plan to get the 444.450 repaired and back on the air for all to use.
We suspect that heavy usage put enough strain on the final amplifier stage to cause the failure. Because we currently have a temporary “band-aid” repair, we have had to reduce the power output of the repeater and we are asking all users to wait a few seconds after the previous person to give the repeater a chance to cool down and avoid having the repeater fail again.
Longer term we have a comprehensive approach to get the repeater back up to normal operation. We hope to purchase a replacement module for the failed part and we estimate that cost to be on the order of $300. We are also considering the purchase of a slightly used external power amplifier (still in warranty) that will allow us to reduce the repeater’s output power and let the external power amp do the heavy lifting. That PA is expected to cost on the order of $500.
To cover the cost of the repeater repair and the purchase of the PA, we have started a repeater fund with a target of $800. Please stop by the W4CQ donation page right now to make a donation. Any funds raised beyond the $800 necessary to get 444.450 in shape will be reserved for any future repeater expense on our other repeaters.
