W4GYL and KE6QEY receive proclamation for W4CQ.

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed Saturday, June 28, 2014 as “American Radio Relay League Field Day” in Mecklenburg County, NC.

The proclamation was signed by the Chairman of the County Commission and presented to the Charlotte Amateur Radio Club W4CQ on June 25. Club Vice-President George Lee W4GYL and Secretary Ted Williams KE6QEY were on hand to receive the proclamation.

According to the proclamation, The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners proclaims June 28, 2014 “American Radio Relay League Field Day”
in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and “encourages all Mecklenburg County residents, especially young people who are interested in science, technology, and electronics to engage the Charlotte Amateur Radio Club and participate in the Club’s Field Day exercise at The Salvation Army Division Headquarters at 501 Archdale Drive in Charlotte.”

Field Day is held annually on the last weekend in June. During a 24 hour period, amateur radio operators get together with their local clubs or in groups to operate on the ham bands, make as many contacts as possible and engage the public to educate them on the merits and benefits of amateur radio.

ARRL Field Day 2014 operations will be conducted From 1800 UTC Saturday, June 28 until 2059 UTC Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the Salvation Army Division Headquarters located at 501 Archdale Drive in Charlotte, NC. The public and media are invited to attend. Below is a text of the proclamation:

Proclamation

WHEREAS, The Charlotte Amateur Radio Club, W4CQ, is a general-interest amateur radio Club which meets the first Thursday of each month at The Salvation Army Division Headquarters at 501 Archdale Drive in Charlotte.

WHEREAS, the Charlotte Amateur Radio Club maintains a permanent radio equipped station at The Salvation Army Division Headquarters with multi-modes amateur radio capability. The Club hosts a weekly open house every Thursday night.

WHEREAS, the Club sponsors three amateur radio repeaters serving the Metrolina area and has a rich history of public service providing communications support for community events, and participates in the national American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day each June.

WHEREAS, the Club call sign, W4CQ, originally belonged to Earle Gluck, one of the Mecklenburg pioneers in commercial broadcasting and amateur radio in Mecklenburg County and who was instrumental in getting WBT radio on the air in April, 1922.

WHEREAS, the Club is affiliated with the American Radio Relay League as a local non-profit organization. The Club provides free education and training for anyone interested in amateur radio, along with the Club’s commitment to serve the public when communications support is needed. The Club participates in simulated emergency drills, which are designed to sharpen the skills of amateur radio operators who would be needed during times of emergencies or disasters.

WHEREAS, the Club maintains a mobile Emergency Communications System equipped with towers and antennas for Emergency and Public Service use. The unit is equipped with radios to operate for local purposes or nationally and internationally using commercial power or emergency backup battery power.

WHEREAS, 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the American Radio Relay League of which the Charlotte Amateur Radio Club is a member. Now, therefore, be

RESOLVED, that the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners does hereby proclaim Saturday, June 28, 2014 as

American Radio Relay League Field Day”

in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and encourages all Mecklenburg County residents, especially young people who are interested in science, technology, and electronics to engage the Charlotte Amateur Radio Club and participate in the Club’s Field Day exercise at The Salvation Army Division Headquarters at 501 Archdale Drive in Charlotte.
